Wow! Encompasses our experience. We were greeted warmly by the hosts and other guests! What a welcoming experience, beds were comfy, the grounds are beautiful, hammocks galore and the bell tower is dreamy! Trek up a couple flights of stairs and look out at the stars and stillness of nature. Having access to coffee and tea was certainly a treat and watching the host family interact and live their lives while also operating a hostel is admirable. We felt at home and loved coming back from venturing out and enjoying the variety of spaces. This place is special all thanks to the love and commitment of staff, the chickens were also lovely 😍. A home away from home, we can't wait to come back! Thank you!!

Stayed here with my friend for a two day trip. It’s centrally located near meat cove, so lots of stuff to do nearby. Plus at a near midpoint to Cheticamp and Ingonish which makes it easy to plan trips.

Pros: Easily one of the warmest/homeliest hostel I’ve been to. They’ve done a fantastic job renovating an old church to make this a fun place. The hosts are very warm and helpful.

Cons: Kitchen can get a bit crowded at times

What to expect at this hostel: upon arrival you will be greeted with a friendly, “You made it” by the host family. And they really are the hosts: you enter their living space! They make it work somehow, accommodating all kinds of travellers, their gear and cooking supplies. We spend a night in the quiet and spotless lower dorm and a night in the private room and were very happy to have stayed in the dorm so don’t fret if the private room isn’t available. They really have it dialled here: massage guns for weary muscles, guitars to noodle on, ear plugs and little lights for each bed. Fantastic location for hikes. We followed their suggestion for “how to spend a day” and it was wonderful. A special place - 100% recommend.

Trust me, do yourself a favor and book more than one night here! You’ll thank yourself later.

It’s such a welcoming environment on all levels. The family has put great care into every detail to make sure guests have a good experience.

It’s very clean and there are quiet hours in the evenings in the house for anyone that wants to get to sleep, and anyone that wants to stay up you can be outside by the fire pit with music as late as they want so it’s a perfect balance.

Some highlights
- The views from the top of the Belltower are epic
- Bonfires are the regular
- They are very knowledgeable and helpful about different things on the island.

Bricin and his partner Patricia are excellent, patricia’s father. Peter is always willing to give some helpful tips and go out of his way If you need help with something. The kids are a joy to be around. I’m still hoping one day cookie the cat warms up to me.

Bricin’s also an ex pro longboarder and can actually give you a lot of interesting information about the sport and how he helped to grow it. There’s also a lot of cool boards and memorabilia throughout the HOSTEL that you can see including an absolutely awesome RV that’s parked beside the firepit.

I enjoyed my time here so much I extended once and then later returned on my travels.

Thank You to all the people who live at Highlands HOSTEL and the guest that I met while I was there! I’ll definitely be back!

A great place to stay amongst friendly people in a central location from which to explore the area. This venue has all you need to be comfortable....even a bonfire in the evenings . Flowers...veggie gardens... and chickens make it a unique stop on the Highlands of Cape Breton.

I LOVED this hostel! My experience here was a highlight on my Cape Breton trip. It's very well kept, homey, comfy, great vibe, and I really loved the communal experience. The people were great - the family and the guests. A couple of us shared making a spaghetti meal with a big salad and then a few of us shared drinks and conversation in the living room. Driving out to Meat Cove is a must too, with a stop at Cabot's Landing. I highly recommend staying at this hostel.

I stayed here with my family a couple of weeks ago, and it was a truly wonderful experience. I really enjoyed the musical instruments around the hostel, which I got to play and listen to other people play. The host family were extremely welcoming and gave us great advice on things we could do in the area such as a couple of really nice restaurants and some lovely coastal walks in the surrounding area. There were also evening campfires and activities to do together. We stayed in the private room and it was very cosy and clean. The overall atmosphere was really nice and had a real sense of community. It's a great opportunity to talk with people all there for different reasons, and I personally learned a lot about different ways of travelling.
It's great there, 100% recommend :)

I had such a lovely stay at Highland Hostel! As a solo traveler, I wanted a home base to explore some hiking trails and beaches in Cape North and to meet other travellers. Highland Hostel was clean, accommodating, and everyone there (staff and other guests) was so friendly! Other guests invited me to join in card and yard games and there were campfires in the evenings. It was very social which is exactly what I wanted.
Thank you to Bricin for pinning my Google maps with so many great spots to check out!
Overall the Highland Hostel made my traveling experience much more memorable and enjoyable than if I were to just camp by myself!

What a cool place! Its a beautiful old church building converted into a hostel. This was not just a hostel, it was a social gathering. There were only 3 of us guests staying the night I was there, and Bricin and his family made us all feel like family too. The best part of the night was card games and music around the huge bonfire! The location is perfect, right at the top of the Cabot Trail. Restaurants and a grocery store were literally a 1 minute car ride away. 11/10 would stay there again if I'm ever on the Cabot trail!

Excellent place. We traveled with two kids and reserved the private room. Kids were happy to feel the atmosphere of home, a lot of games and camp fire in the evening. The host gave us a lot of travel suggestions and we modified our plan. The local beach in South Harbour was the best. We found it. Thank you!!!

I highly recommend the Highlands Hostel. Everything was excellent- location, cleanliness, and value. The thing that sets it apart from the rest are the hosts. Never have I felt so welcome at a hostel. I ended up staying 5 nights! Bricin and Patricia were awesome. Peter also requires a special mention. He went out of his way to help me finish my bike tour.

Really lovely hostel in an old church. Loved the people and the vibe there. There owners immediately made you feel at home. Highlands Hostel rocked my solo trip to Cape Breton! The family-run spot and their seasonal crew (who become part of the hostel family) welcomed me warmly, turning my first hostel experience into a blast and made me feel right at home. Rainy days were no downer—they had games and instruments and the hostel family provides good company. I participated in their Halloween haunted house which was a highlight and spent nights winding down with the family by watching movies. The location of the hostel also made accessing good hikes a breeze. Walking distance to a grocery store, a well-equipped kitchen, and top-notch cleanliness sealed the deal. I loved it so much that I extended my stay. I was sad to leave but I can't wait to return! :)

Really great spot, friendly hosts and a wild spot !
Great stopping point if you’re in the highlands and are looking to stay up in them for a night to finish off a day of exploring, or start one! Seems like a great home base as it’s dead centre of the Cabot trail , so hikes and wonderful communities a quick drive in any direction
I stayed in the shared accommodations in the basement and it was warm and cozy, clean and everyone was respectful
Quaint kitchen that had a old farmhouse feel to it. A great common room that was full and lively. I unfortunately was exhausted when I showed up so I went right to bed, but it was a excellent vibe it seemed, everyone was having fun.
I recommend it for a traveller on a budget and/or aren’t campers or are exploring in the fall/winter.
I’ll be back

Stayed here this past weekend and I honestly never had such a unique and amazing experience. Staying here was like staying at a close friend’s place. The prices were more than reasonable, the atmosphere was unbelievable and environment of the surrounding area was unbeatable. Staying here was a unique experience. As an older solo traveler, I felt safe and welcome. So easy to make friends: see the stars, make a bonfire, listen to fiddle music in the living room (with Gary doing a jig), play "are you a wolf" with Billie & Cash, talk to a wonderful variety of interesting people over breakfast - or dinner, walk the beaches - or the trails. Amazingly clean, good sleeping (quiet hours), cook your own food or eat out nearby. Great place to stay for Cabot Trail exploring - 5 days was not long enough.

We are a couple in our 50s so we were a little apprehensive about staying in a hostel. We stayed 4 nights, and loved every second. The 5 family members and the staff are amazing, welcoming and attentive to everyone’s needs. By the time we left it felt so natural to be in their house. The church is situated perfectly to explore both sides of the trail. There’s a couple of nice outdoor areas, and the RV, for both socializing and having space to sit and read etc. Could not recommend this place more. Thanks again for having us. Dave & Trish

Bricin and his family have created a wonderful place to hang out in between hikes when exploring the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. On my first night we enjoyed a nice peaceful night at the bonfire with singing talking and a game of “nails” (be sure to play along - it’s addictive!) - would absolutely recommend this hostel!

Superb experience, a hostel with a great soul.
The places are superb. The dorms are top notch and there are lots of little touches that make the difference.
The family as well as the volunteers are adorable.

Hosts are lovely, helpful, generous and welcoming. Place is clean, comfortable, funky, and well equipped. Spent my evening doing yoga in the bell tower, loving the fantastic view. Will absolutely return. Highly recommended.

We met friendly and open hosts, who organized a campfire in the evening, for guests who still want to chat and get to know each other. We had the chance to retreat to our room. Dinner was rather special as all guests ate and cooked together in the living room, outside or kitchen. For people who want more privacy, this place is less suitable. For backpackers and people traveling alone and happy to make new acquaintances, the place is cool and well suited.

Exception service above and beyond! Bricin, Patricia, and then entire crew was so hospitable and helpful. Bricin even helped us connect with a bike mechanic in the area who saved our trip by coming straight to the Hostel and working on our bikes. Highly recommend the place!

Where to start? We stayed only for one night, but this hostel is one you definitely remember! Amazing welcome by the owners, very great atmosphere, the discovery of baby hockey, very well maintained. If you go to Cape North, you have to stay there (and more than one night ^^)

This was quite possibly the best hostel experience of my life. Where to begin? First, amazing location - right off the Cabot Trail, easy access to beaches and parks; and Peter was kind enough to drive me to and from a nearby bicycle rental place. Second, Bricin and Patricia (and kids) are kind and thoughtful hosts, great conversationalists, and fun people to be around. (And party with.) Ditto for the volunteers, Lynn and Courtney. Finally, the hostel itself is awesome - clean beds, full kitchen, and so on. I want to go back!!!!

My friend and I spent two nights at the hostel and we can only echo what’s already been said. There’s a reason this place has so many 5 stars - incredibly clean, amazing location, homey environment, safe etc. The host family is exceptionally kind and hospitable and their great energy attracts lovely travellers and volunteers of all ages. Bricin planned an entire itinerary for us one day which allowed us to see some truly incredible local gems we otherwise would not have found. We recommend staying two nights to experience it all!

So I finally made it to my destination! I’m checked into the Highlands Hostel and have the whole place to myself!!

What an amazing family they are. Bricin, Patricia, Billie, and Cash are seriously the best. They are truly making me feel at home. This morning, I went up to their bell tower to continue writing my book. I laid in the coziest hammock, and had so many ideas just flow through me. It was so peaceful. Can’t wait to go there again tomorrow morning!!

Currently, Cash (named after Johnny) is painting a digital picture of me. Billie said she’s gonna do a watercolour of me & my guitar. Can’t wait to see them!!

This is truly paradise; Heaven on earth. Thank you so much Lyons family! I look forward to the rest of my time here, and will definitely be recommending the Highlands Hostel to all my friends!

I chose to sleep in their Motorhome, “The F Bomb.” It is so badass! Leo loves it and cuddled me all night 🐶

Highly recommend this place to everyone. If you’re thinking about booking, please just go ahead and book now. Bricin and Patricia are two of the most welcoming people I have ever met in my life. I have never enjoyed myself so much on a solo trip as I have staying here. I will be back very soon, and I will be bringing a group of friends! Cheers!

My experiences at the Highland Hostel have been life affirming. Patricia is one of the most compassionate people I have ever met. Add to that her incredible partner Bricin, their adorable and beautifully creative children Billie and Cash, and the best ever Grandpa Peter…and you have the makings of a trip to Cape North, Highlands Hostel, and Cape Breton that you will never forget. The area is unparalleled in beauty world wide and the friendliness of the area is heart warming. You will want to come back…and even consider moving here. Thank you, Highland Hostel and your guardians. I am grateful to you and will be back.

WOW! Such a beautiful land, building, family. Cash and Billie Rose were great hosts (as were their Mom and Dad). From the moment we stepped into the hostel we knew we made the right choice. Our only regret is that we were not able to stay longer.
Thanks to everyone for making our time there a memory to cherish alway.

This is really an amazing place. I was skeptical at first, of being in a large dorm as I like my privacy at night - but it is the nicest dorm I've ever seen, and with 2 large bathrooms and thoughtful layout and guidance for fellow guests, it did not feel difficult to share with others.
I was also skeptical of the price at first ($50 for half a bunk bed?!) but once you see what you are getting for that, you will realize it is a fabulous deal. 3 cheers for the Highland Hostel! I will be back!! Ps make sure to make time to go hang out in a hammock in the bell tower with a 360 degree view of the highlands and ocean :)

I just spent a week in Cape North on the Cabot Trail. A place of friendly people is an understatement. While there I stayed at the Highland Hostel. I don't have much to add to the comments here. It's easy to see they're all singing the same song.
If you are in Cape North you should check out the hostel in fact I would put it on my trip list. I can't imagine you'll regret it.

This hostel is the pure definition of a 'hidden gem'. I cannot express how incredible this place is, you really just have to visit for yourself ! Photos do not do it justice.

Bricin is also one of the best hosts I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. He and his family are so very accommodating. They even mailed me my speaker that I left there back to my place in Halifax. Unparalleled customer service !

If you're looking for an escape to a curious and seemingly impossibly charismatic place, this is the one. I will return soon!

We were honoured to host the Dalhousie Outdoors Society this past weekend 24 enjoyed hiking, swimming and relaxing.

Highlands Hostel Hiking Holiday

There is no place more capable of washing away the stresses of school than Highlands Hostel, located in Cape North, Cape Breton. 24 DOS members made the trek up to the highlands over reading week on the first overnight trip of this distance, length, and size since at least 2019 !!!

Day 1: November 6th, 2022. Weather: 22C, sun and cloud. Participants and drivers met at the SUB at 5:30 am, with only one casualty to daylight savings alarm confusion (picked up en route). Six cars made their way to Antigonish to grocery shop (no easy feat for 24 people), and marvel at the town that hosts one of the Maritimes' most well-known cults (St. FX). We then went our separate ways and made our way to Cape North, stopping along the way at viewpoints, beaches, short hikes, moose sightings, and even breweries! Once arrived and settled at the hostel, we headed out to hike Tenerife Mountain. Winds were gusting easily 100+ km/h at the summit — a truly wild highlands experience. After we made our descent, the group went for a dip at North Harbour Beach. Dinner on day one was chili and garlic bread, followed immediately by merriment and s'mores at a raging bonfire.

Day 2: November 7th, 2022. Weather: 18C, cloud, mist, downpour, sun, cloud. A delicious breakfast of banana-oat-chocolate chip pancakes was served at 7 am sharp, with most of the group hitting the road by 8 am to hike Pollet's Cove. A smaller group broke off, opting instead to hike the Aspy Trail. The group was surprised to complete Pollet's in less than 2 hours in each direction (16km total), with incredible views of mountains, ocean, and seals the entire way. Ahead of schedule, the rest of the afternoon was spent deep in cards, massage guns, and tea. Dinner on day two was burgers, veggie burgers, and Rob Tremayne's signature big dirty salad. Another classic bonfire was held late into the evening, with many staying up to witness the night's lunar eclipse.

Day 3: November 8th, 2022. Weather: 4C, sun, cloud, mist, rain, hail, snow. A lazy morning, marked by cards and a full dinner-style breakfast. We were sad to pack up and leave but excited for the completion of the Cabot trail. The group said their goodbyes and split up, with many coincidentally reconvening at lookouts along the road, and even the Frenchy's in New Glasgow.

I love Highlands Hostel. I love the Dalhousie Outdoors Society.

Exactly as described super charming place perfectly located halfway on the cabot trail. Kitchen has everything you need, the place has as much character as you can get in a Airbnb and the mattress was surprisingly comfy. Also open on the off-season and drinkable tap water! Downside is that it’s shared sleeping rooms and for light sleepers etc would not recommend (ear plugs are supplied)- but you know this when you book the room so cannot complain there. Would stay again!

Terrific place. Extremely clean. Well-designed retrofit of a former church. Everything, from bedding to towels, is high quality and comfortable. There are many thoughtful touches that helped give me the best sleep I'd had in weeks: extra blankets, a comfortable mattress, a shelf with plug-in sockets and a reading lamp at the head of each bed, ear plugs on each shelf and by the door, and a bus/lounge outside where people who wanted to stay up late were encouraged to congregate. The hosts are quite helpful, and, even though I was much older than most of the guests, I felt deeply welcomed. Great value for the money, and I wish I could have stayed longer. In the warm months, don't miss a swim or at least a long beach walk at nearby Cabots Landing park. And Arts North has high-quality Cape Breton crafts, including pottery, hooked rugs, woolen goods, and jewelry -- some of the best I saw in Nova Scotia. The Coastal Loop off the Cabot Trail, especially during the evening golden light, is well worth exploring.

Lots of beauty (hikes/beaches/St Paul's Museum to name but a couple!) within a short drive as well as great spots to access food to cook onsite or restaurants to feed you! As with pretty much everyone.........we wish we had booked for more than one night! We will definitely return soon!

I don’t use airbnb much. However, i can say that it’ll be hard to beat this experience for the rest of my life. The hosts and on-site residents are incredibly friendly and the facilities are top-notch and clean. There’s so much history in the chapel and the location is perfect for anyone driving the cabot trail and looking for a night to crash before continuing the journey. You’ll hate leaving once you’re here - it almost feels like a second home rather an airbnb. Kudos to these hosts for what they do.

I booked three nights and by the end I wish I could've stayed at least a couple more weeks! Ideal location right in the middle of the national park, perfect to do a whole day east and a whole day west, or just to drive the loop for a night. Close to stores and restaurants, beaches, hikes, everything. The Cape Breton style repurposed church is amazing, the grounds are excellent, everything is laid out to make guests comfortable, from solo travelers like myself to entire families with children. But the best part is the people. Bricin, his family and his hostel family are not only welcoming and accommodating, but just cool people. Ask them for advice on what to see during your stay, or just share a night next to the fire or playing the piano. I cannot recommend enough that you stay here as long as you can! I look forward to back soon.

We made use of the indoor and outdoor kitchen. We met some great people, enjoyed wonderful free live music one night, and were made to feel so at home. Staying with Patricia, Bricin, and the kids was like stopping off to spend a night with family. I was motorcycling the Cabot Trail but what I’ll remember most is the warm welcome, the fun family atmosphere, and the restful sleep. You will wish you had more time to spend with these folks in their beautiful establishment.

Stayed here two nights with my wife in the 11 people dormitory. The dorm is really nice and clean with reading light and an outlet. There were two washrooms to use which was great. The rest of the hostel was pretty awesome too with a kitchen to cook food and lots of places to hang out in the front yard and inside like the clock tower. Bricin and Patricia were really welcoming and gave tips on places to see. You can easily stay in this place for a long time!

This hostel was incredibly cozy and clean, with everything needed for a comfortable stay. Moreover, the host family and staff were so friendly and helpful I immediately felt at ease. They even sat down with me to pin lots of great hikes/lookout points/restaurants in the area on maps for me. In the evenings we would sit by the fire, watch movies, chat, or listen to other guests play on some of the many musical instruments in the living room.

I'm so glad I stayed here while visiting Cape Breton! Made my stay absolutely wonderful!

Quite possibly the most hospitable people I have ever met. You would be insane not to stay here. Made some friends, saw some wild views, watched some hockey, sat by a raging fire and blasted tunes, climbed a literal mountain. Thanks Bricin and Patricia. What a comfy, welcoming stay, and a great Canadian hospitality and hostel setting that Bricin and Patricia and their kids have created. These are great peoples. I only stayed a night as a solo traveller, and right when I walked in was greeted by four happy folks and immediately felt welcomed. They helped me order food at a local resturant and had hidden gem hikes pinned on my map! Wanted to share these two just to show how they go above and beyond to make the stay comfortable. For anyone traveling solo or with friends this is the only place you should stay when traveling the Cabot Trail, even if you've never stayed at a hotel before this would be a great experience!

Amazing place. Good people. Clean accommodations. I am already planning to come back here again.

I Stayed with my partner in the private room and we had a phenomenal time. Firstly the layout of the hostel is one of the coolest I’ve ever seen, which includes an amazing view from the church bell tower. Secondly the host family was extremely welcoming and knowledgeable about the community as well as recommending the best hikes and activities. We were able to have the best of both worlds from early, peaceful nights to late night partying, karaoke, and drinks at the campfire. I would 100% return to the hostel.

. I've stayed in many hostels and yours is by far the coolest I've experience and definitely has the most character.

What an amazing experience at Highlands with Bricin and Patricia. They are just two lovely authentic people who do their absolute best to maintain a beautiful and clean hostel for their many guests. I have stayed in many hostels across the world and this must be one of the best. It feels like home and I can give no higher praise than that! Our family stayed in the family room with my elderly mother and our friend’s young daughter and we all loved the place. Thank you Bricin and Patricia for our wonderful stay with you!

I based our trip to Cape Breton on the staying here because it looked so cool! I called Patricia to ask about availability and suitability for our family of two adults and one 9-year-old over Thanksgiving. We stayed for two nights but wished for longer. We did all of the suggested hikes which are off the beaten path and amazing, they aren’t on any maps! Campfires, tunes and karaoke, great company! The people that stay here know they have lucked out. We will be back!

I don’t even know where to start about the experience you will have at this hostel, The entire family is beyond friendly, kind and pleasant. Extremely clean, beds are comfortable and the hospitality is out of this world!! Highly recommend,

Had a fantastic stay here back in the summer. Bricin's and Patricia's warm hospitality starts well-before you even arrive. When I told Patricia we were hoping to explore the area in the morning before check-in she sent back a super helpful email full of tips and suggestions. When we walked in the door Bricin immediately loaded up my phone's map with local sites that we used throughout our visit and I know I'll be looking at each time I'm in the area. Evening hospitality was top-notch good times.... cozy bonfire with great tunes, fun games and lots of laughs. Can't wait for the next stay!

Found this hostel by chance as I was planning a hunting trip. The owners are awesome and the rooms were spotless ! They really took care of us - so much so I booked another trip! Can’t wait to get there again.

Don’t even think about staying anywhere else when you come to Cape Breton, this is where you want to be. I would say it’s worth a trip to Cape Breton just to stay here. Absolutely phenomenal place. The owners are just the sweetest coolest people and the building is super cool. Whether you’re looking for a quiet nature getaway or to sing some karaoke: there’s such an amazing atmosphere here that and you’re nearly guaranteed to have the experience you want and to meet some very kind and interesting people. Thank you for a great stay and a memorable birthday.

visited the island as a nova scotian local for the hikes and of course to witness the spectacular autumn colors! For location: this hostel was very close to lots of trailheads we had planned to hike Truly one of the most unique hostels I've ever seen, the family and staff has put a great amount of work into repurposing the church, while adopting sustainable living habits, and adding a great taste of personality too! The family was very welcoming and kind. Lots of entertainment and activities to keep busy around the property, from watching the chicken scratch around the property in the mornings to the exchanging stories around the campfires. Very memorable experience. Can't wait to come back for another experience!

I was supposed to be there 1 day ended up staying 3 nights. You must stop here on your trip on the Cabot trail. It also has great wifi (good place for people working on the road) and it is super clean. Thank you so much for everything guys, hope to see you again soon :)

We had such a pleasant stay at Highlands Hostel. It was our first stop on our cycling trip around the Cabot trail and they were very accomodating. Had a spot to lock our bikes, quiet hours were respected so we could get some rest, little notes with instructions were left everywhere so everything was easy to find, and we had a shelf full of board games to keep us busy during our stay. One of us had even forgotten our phone charger, and they lent us one for the rest of the trip, which we mailed back to them once we got back home. Can't recommend this place enough!

My stay at the Highlands Hostel was Perfect! Bricin, Patricia, Peter, Billie, and Cash invite you in to be part of the family as soon as you arrive. Really great wholesome family vibe, but also with a wild side. There weren't many guests staying at the Hostel given the Covid pandemic, and I was even the only guest for most of my stay, but Bricin went the extra mile to make sure I had a good time. The first night I arrived Bricin took us on a moonlit dip. Every night was a great time, and Bricin even helped me get acquainted with the locals ;), and got me an invite to a "quaint" Cape Breton kitchen party. It was such a great time. On the day I was supposed to leave I was having some serious car troubles and Peter went above and beyond. He drove me to Sydney and back to fix the issue! He took 6+ hours out of his day to help me get out of a tricky situation. I couldn't be more thankful! YOU GUYS ROCK! Special shootout to Daniel. Rock on, Brother!!

One of the best hostels I have stayed in. Bricin and Patricia are warm, funky and so generous with their time. The place is gorgeous and comfortable, it feels like home! You can count on Bricin to find all the secrets that the Cabot Trail has to offer. My only regret is that I only spent two nights there. I highly recommend this Nova Scotian jewel! From Quebec with love <3

I went up with two friends for Tibbs (Tipsy) eve. It was such a beautiful atmosphere. The view from atop the bell tower is fantastic. Bricin was such a good host, and got right into the holiday party spirit. He treated us like one of the locals, took us to a local dance and took us caroling. We had a bonfire to ring in the holidays as well. The drive up the Cabot trail in winter can be tough drive, but it's worth it. The Cabot trail in winter is just a different kind of beautiful.

I've stayed in MANY hostels throughout my travels, but this one was the best experience I've EVER had. The owner of this hostel Bricin legitimately wants you to have the best time. He is such a good guy and he is more than happy to give you pointers on what you should see while you're exploring the island. He had a campfire each night I was there (2 nights). I spent an entire day with my buddy (who I was traveling with) driving around the island to see all the places which Bricin had recommended we see. THEN I was able to come back to the hostel and sit around a campfire to wind down! The Hostel itself is so unique, It's an old church that this guy (and his wonderful family) painstakingly turned into one of the most cozy and comfortable spots on the entire island. I mean this quite seriously when I say that this guy could DOUBLE what you need to pay to stay there and it would STILL be worth it. If you have not had the chance to stay at this hostel yet, I seriously cannot recommend this place enough. It will re-define what you expect a hostel to deliver. I know that if I'm EVER up in Cape Breton again that is where I will be staying.

Bricin and his family were wonderful! My dog just loved it there. I could go on for hours on the great time we had. We certainly tell everyone we know about them, we can't praise them enough. Brice took it on him to make sure we got the most out of our short stay in the area, he definitely knows his neck of the woods, provided maps and recommended, showed us and drew on the map :) , the best trails for us to hike, for the time we had, and we're so glad, having met him and his family definitely made it the best part of our trip, we hiked many lovely trails with great views and there's so much we realize we couldn't do, we're anxious to drop by again next time, but this time in summer. This Airbnb was a church that has been converted into an amazing hostel ran by an amazing family. It has a comfy cabin feel with a great touch of character -there is nothing like it! Right from the beginning I was welcomed with open arms. Bricin was a great host, he gave me and the other guests some local tips about where to go and what to see (Places that are a gem in Cape Breton), and he always had an invitation to entertain everyone with a fire at night. Patricia and the children were very sweet and welcoming. Peter, which is Patricia's father, was a great person to talk to as well! He was very kind and showed me their future plans for the hostel! I cannot wait to see how it will look in the future. The location is close to a store and restaurant and many hiking trails and beaches. This hostel seem to attract some very nice and wholesome guests because that's what I've experienced during my time, and what I notice is that they keep coming back as well! Bricin and Patricia were absolutely fabulous hosts. They were so warm and welcoming. We stayed with them on a cold and rainy night, and Bricin had a nice warm fire up and running in no time. Their two kids and their cat YumYum were also so friendly! The experience of staying in a converted church was also very interesting. Bricin and Patricia's knowledge of the area is tremendous, and Bricin was able to drop pins of "insider-hidden-gem" locations for me on Google maps. These were very accurate and I had next to no trouble in finding them. We stayed in the private room and all the bedding and towels were very clean. Patricia was also very quick to respond to emails and was able to confirm our reservation within a day of me inquiring. Their kitchen has everything you need to cook, and Patricia was very gracious in offering us coffee the next morning. I would recommend staying here 100% and would love to be back.

Bricin and Patricia are two of the kindest, most helpful, and overall best people I've met. And the church is a super awesome destination in itself on the trail! Lots to do literally right outside the door, and a great place to hang out inside if you're beat from the trails or the weather turns. I'll make this place a base-camp for a summer trip to CBI!”

"Hey There Bricin, Patricia & Kids #HighlandsHostel. Thank-you for the fantastic accommodations and personality. Your place is as clean and tidy (or tidier) than my Grandmother's home. What a lovely family, that's chosen Cape North over many places traveled the world over.

Loved your tale of generosity on your first Christmas in Cape North. Back when Bricin was 15 years old, his Mother asked him to dress up as Santa... to lift the spirits of some folks who were finding their way within a care home, where she was working.

The 2017 Christmas was Bricin's first Christmas in Cape North. He put on his Santa Suit and visited a home for mentally challenged adults just up the street. Bricin filled his sack with wrapped apples. "Why apples", I said? "Because it's all I had to give", He said.

Keep an eye folks, this guy has the laugh and heart of Santa. For all of you parents out there wondering how to teach your kids the value of "doing the right thing", give them the opportunity to do the right thing. Sure worked for this guy at Christmas.

Job well done to Bricin's Mother. Hope to see you again soon Bricin & Family. Highlands Hostel"

I've been quite a few places in this wild world and i can confidently say that my stay at Highlands Hostel made my trip around Canada one of the most incredible experiences I've ever had. i was travelling solo and stayed five nights here and sort of arrived not knowing what i was going to get up to. No worries though, as Bricin filled my maps with little pins of the best hidden spots around the island and cool mountains to explore. The hostel is such a fun place to meet other people and hear some great stories. Bricin usually has a fire going most nights and if you're lucky he might even get the f-bomb going for a midnight beach run :D You can't beat the warm and inviting hospitality of this place and Bricin and Patricia! I had planned three nights at Highlands Hostel ("the Church"), and ended up staying for ten nights!! Bricin, Patricia, Peter, and the kids are a kind and welcoming family, creating an amazing experience in a beautiful place. This is a well-functioning hostel in all the traditional senses-- clean and spacious, a useful and stocked kitchen, comfortable beds and linens, common spaces, and lots of suggestions for things to do in the area. But Highlands Hostel goes beyond the standard experience-- it is located in a truly spectacular part of Nova Scotia, near amazing hikes and beaches. Bricin and Patricia suggested really fabulous local spots that I might have missed otherwise, and the sense of camaraderie at the hostel was much warmer than at a lot of places. I had a great time, but it is not a "party" scene-- I definitely slept well!! But there was a great vibe and lots of music and interesting conversation, especially around the campfire! I met some very down-to-earth, interesting, and kind travellers and locals. More than anything, I am really grateful for the hospitality of Bricin, Patricia, and their family. I hope to return in winter!! This is the place to stay in Cape Breton!

“Google Maps may lead you astray, so keep your eyes out for the old church and trailer covered in decals! The hostel is very unique - it is a renovated church and the co-ed dorm is an open space on the 2nd floor. There are 1.5 bathrooms, and there was never an issue with waiting. During the day, it is a quieter spot because most people are out exploring the trail. At night, the place is very social - there is a patio to hang out on and usually a bonfire. The hostel is located within walking distance of a restaurant and grocery store with a small take-out kitchen. Bricin and Patricia are very sweet, friendly, and helpful. They are very accommodating to requests and your needs. i would definitely stay here again!”

When you step into their home, you will be immersed into an experience that you may have not experienced anywhere else in the world. We stayed at Patricia and Bricin's hostel for three nights in July. We booked the private room for our family of three, plus my mother-in-law. Their place was a great landing spot for our day trips. One day we did a long hike, and my MIL stayed at the hostel. Bricin took her for a short road trip that ended up being several hours watching the lobster boats (they picked up a fresh lobster for my dinner!). If you like to chat with people, this is the place for you! And if you are quieter, there are nice spots for you too. We attended a farmer's market that weekend, which was a good source of local baked goods. The provided linens were clean, as were our room and the bathrooms. The private did not have a window (apparently it is coming), but we actually enjoyed the darkness a lot and slept really well. They are building 6 bunk beds in the lower level, and we already have plans to go back with friends and their kids. It was a great place to stay and it is only going to get better!

Here’s what Chris wrote

“It was a pleasure staying at the hostel. As a family of five we were able to book the private room which accommodates four, as described. Bricin was able to provide an extra cot for nominal fee. We arrived late after a long day of sight seeing, which was no issue. The shared spaces, washroom, family room etc. were interesting and comfortable for a hostel. Better than expected. Bricin, Patricia and kids were very pleasant. We only stayed one night but could have easily stayed longer. ”

“This was easily the best experience at an Airbnb that I've ever had! The Church itself is in a great location just outside of Highlands National Park, so many amazing spots. And if you're in need of help finding these spots or things to see our do... Bricin (the most Charismatic person you will ever meet) has a deep appreciation for Cape Breton and is more than happy to share his knowledge of the area to make sure you walk away having the best time possible. Really, Bricin and Patricia are both welcoming hosts that will make you feeling like you're staying with old friends rather than a typical hostel. The inside of the church is a beautiful open concept design, but still retains a very cozy feeling. I had some of the most comfortable sleeps I've had away from home. Earplugs are provided for guests, but I found it to be pretty quiet in the evening. If you do feel inclined to chat and connect with other travellers late into the evening, there's usually a fire pit out back that Bricin has going all night. I was originally only planning to stay one evening but, enjoyed it so much I ended up staying another night. The second night, they even brought in a local fiddle player for some live entertainment. Cape Breton ended up being the highlight of my Atlantic Canada visit. This was large in part to Bricin, Patricia, their family, and community at the Highlands Hostel. ”

“Patricia and Bricin have created a unique hostel in this converted church. Thanks to their hard work, it is not only unique, but also very comfortable (with air conditioning), spotlessly clean and supplied with lovely linens. The church is a shared, convivial environment (our room was private though) since they are basically welcoming you into their home. It is also a perfect location for exploring the North end of the island and we used it as a base for sea kayaking, river swimming, hiking as far north as meat cove - all within easy range. “Bricins Church... is the name I have coined for this place. Its a beautiful church perched atop a mountain in Cape Breton's Cabot Trail with panoramic views. Inside its a hostel with bunk beds but they also have a private room for a family with kids. Patricia his wife, will make you comfortable and give you anything you need even if its unusual request. Bricin is an encyclopedia of Cape Breton island, give him your phone and he will drop pins on your map to spectacular places that your friends who have visited before will be jealous with envy. We had a amazing evening around the bonfire connecting with fellow travellers, sharing stories, experiences, and hearing Bricins speed skateboarding escapades that brought him to Cape Breton Island. All with beautiful Scottish highland music in the background to complete a memorable evening. I highly recommend this place for a wonderful stay on the Cabot Trail. Inside, there is a living room, a shared bunk beds gallery upstairs, and a separate room for a family to stay. The bathroom upstairs is shared, but we had no problems with privacy at all. Besides, the floor and the doors are painted with flowers and other ornaments. Really cool! Patricia is actually in the process of making a second bathroom so future guests will have an even more private use. We used the family's kitchen, which is completely stuffed with everything one might need. The house is right on Cabot Trail, very easily accessible, and the grocery store is 2 houses away. We had a quiet, relaxing and pleasant time!”

Hello Patricia,

I just wanted to thank you for such a wonderful stay. You have a really neat space and I really enjoyed hearing about your efforts to turn the church into a hostel while preserving the church as best as possible.
Thanks again,
Amanda

This hostel is just super great. The idea that a church is transformed into a hostel is superb. The entire vibe is great. You meet a lot of people who came to hike all around Cape Breton Highlands. The location is perfect because any direction you go you get to hiking trails. The beds are comfy. The owner are just awesome, so much fun. If you ask for it they get fresh lobster they cook at night for a certain price. They have kitchen with fridge you can use. There is a convenient store and a restaurant just like 5 mins walk away. The loft is a good place to socialize after a long hike. This hostel... Just go for it!

“Great budget accommodation in Cape Breton. Hostel style. Very clean shared bathroom. We stayed in a private room without windows, ac present. Comfortable beds. Guests have access to the kitchen and living room. The building is a previous church remodeled as a house. Walls appear to be thin but we didn't have issues with noise; other guests were quiet. Host kindly provides ear plugs if you need. Towels and bedding also provided. Patricia was very kind and friendly and had suggestions for our trip. Recommended for budget travellers.”

“Had a FABULOUS stay here at the Highlands Hostel. We were warmly greeted by our hosts Bricin and Patricia and given lots of helpful tips during our three day stay. There is soooooo much to see on the Cabot Trail and this is the perfect location to explore both the east and the west sides. I gladly give my highest recommendations to the Cape North Highlands Hostel.”

“You will not regret staying at the Highlands Hostel. We arrived late, but were warmly greeted by our hosts. The beds are very comfortable and the hosts thoughtfully provide earplugs for each guest during their stay. As described, the house is a converted church and is a beautiful warm space. As for Patricia and Bricin, you may come as guests, but you will leave feeling more like family! I gladly give my highest recommendations to the Cape North Highlands Hostel.”

“We stayed at Bricin's place for one night during our tour of Cape Breton. His repurposed church was situated exactly halfway around the trail which was really convenient, and close to the whale watching in Bay St Lawrence and Meat Cove. There is a lovely little general store just down the road serving the BEST breakfast sandwiches we've ever had! Bricin and his wife Patricia were very hospitable and kind, and they stayed up with us and the other guests telling stories over the campfire. Their kids were also home for the summer, which was nice. My only note is that the private bedroom has no window (which was okay for sleeping). Overall a great half-way point on the Cabot Trail!”

“Clean, comfortable and welcoming. Bricin and Patricia are both excellent hosts and do their best to ensure that you enjoy your time. I enjoyed a couple of fires and great lobster on the beach. It was quiet at night and my bed was very comfortable. The space was Sparkling clean and it had everything I needed. I would recommend this place to anyone and I can’t wait to go back ! ”

“There aren't a lot of places to stay in Cape North and this is an interesting spot - a 100-year-old church turned into a hostel - the place wasn't full so it wasn't too noisy - be aware that there isn't any signage yet - good value”

Colton Moon

First and foremost, greatest hostel on the planet. The owner, Bricin “Striker” Lyons is a warm-hearted bro who welcomed us with open arms. He’s got amazing hospitality and told us of the best spots to check out around the area. The 100 year old church is very cozy and has a stunning view from the bell tower. It’s currently being renovated to increase capacity so it can only get more amazing. Even if you’re just passing through I highly recommend stopping by and checking it out. 11/10 would stay again. 11/10 would recommend to absolutely anyone. Striker, if you’re reading this I love you buddy and I’ll never forget you!

“Booked this place before I purchased plane tickets. Location and price is unbeatable- there are restaurants and groceries a few steps away. Bricin and his wife were amazing hosts, never a dull moment. I always looked forward to returning back to the hostel after a long day of hiking to continue the fun. Bricin will keep you entertained and also runs delicious lobster boils. The most unique and positive hostel experience. ”

My wife and I stayed at the Highlands Hostel on our trip around the Cabot Trail. We loved the place so much we made a point to stay an extra night. As soon as we walked in we felt so welcomed and at home. The hostel is in a small old church building that has been carefully and lovingly renovated. You can still go in the bell tower which gives you a great 360 view of the surroundings. If you chose to stay here, the hosts will ensure you have a time you’ll never forget. During our time, Bricin took us and a few other guests in his old RV to the nearby beach and we had a lobster cookout on the beach. It’s these special moments, and their desire to give their guests that make this place so unforgettable. If we get so lucky to travel Cape Breton again, we would go out of our way to stay at this hostel again. I can’t emphasize anymore how enjoyable of an experience this was, and how lucky I feel to have been able to experience it for even a short amount of time! Thanks so much for the hospitality!

Awesome people! Awesome place! Stay here now!

Had such a great stay at this hostel! The place is cosy, warm and clean and the hosting family make you feel at home right away. And, we got to eat Fresh Lobster! Which was soooo good. Also it is located in a beautiful area with all the hiking trails just around the corner. Highly recommended!!

"I've had some great experiences with airbnb and hostels, but this has definitely been the best. I highly recommend anyone touring Cabot trail to stay here. Absolutely amazing experience. Had a lobster cookout over the campfire and got to meet some other travellers from around Canada. Our hosts were the friendliest people and the beds were clean and comfy. 100% would come back again:)"

“It is pretty cool sleeping in this gorgeous renovated church. It is very close to the cross country ski trails and there are all the joys of the national park in their back yard. The beds and pillows were amazing. We slept in the upstairs room with a queen bed and a bunk bed. There was a fan in the room which kept the temperature perfect. There is no window in the room which keeps it nice and dark. There is a shared kitchen with tea and coffee available. The bathroom was shared with the loft but this did not present a problem. My son who is eleven really enjoyed the action with the owners young children. We were there during a snow storm in early April but still really enjoyed ourselves. Patricia and Bricin went out of their way to look out for us. We would definitely stay here again”

Wir hatten einen schönen Aufenthalt. Es wird ordentlich eingeheizt, das kleine Hostel wird familiär geführt und es was stets sauber. Eine süße weiße Katze lebt mit im Haushalt.

We had a wonderful time at The Highland Hostel. We spent a weekend there in February. The house (the church) was beautiful and our hosts were lovely. We were within walking distance Cape North Cross Country Skiing. The accommodations were great: clean, quiet, well equipped, reasonably priced and safe. We would definitely stay there again. Bricin, Patricia, Billy, Cash and Yum Yum, we will see you all again. It was so nice to meet you and get to know you. You have great energy and you have a great thing going on there. Remarkable! Cheers, Marie Alayne and Terrie

A beautiful and warm space to stay and experience the Cabot Trail, run by such a welcoming and wonderful family. Breath-taking hikes short drives all around the church, something for any range of ability or experience, and the sunrise from the top of the steeple is incredible. A must stop on your Cape Breton adventure, and to help support a beautiful family’s dream.

The Highlands Hostel is a beautiful church in Cape North, Nova Scotia. It is located conveniently along the Cabot Trail giving you access to explore everything the national park has to offer! Inside the hostel there are two bathrooms (upstairs bathroom has the shower), washer/dryer, kitchen, a big common space, lots of beds and bunks (we had a crew of 11 visiting and there was a bed for each of us at the time) and the bell tower with a fantastic view. Peter, Bricin, Patricia and the kids are amazing hosts and they always have great stories to share. Thank you for having us there in August for the Coast to Coast tour, I look forward to coming back to visit!!

(Peter)

Thanks Gene, we thoroughly enjoyed all of your company and look forward to the next visit

A very spacious and beautiful building. host family is extremely generous and accommodating. It is kept very clean, has ample outlets, beds and washrooms for guests. its located in a very scenic valley, with great views of the local area from the historic church steeple. Within walking distance of two beaches, a local restaurant, a general store and a gas station. Price is very affordable and competitive. Highly recommend staying at this hostel for your Cabot trail adventures.

Bricin is an amazing host, the location is perfect and the building is beautiful, spacious and cozy. Gas station, groceries and a restaurant are all within walking distance which is insane for a place this secluded. There's a river down the road with a rock beach you can swim in, there's a private beach 5 minutes down the road. Also the sunrises and sunsets from the steeple of the church are INSANE! This place is a must visit in the highlands national park.

The highlands hostel is on its way to being one of the great hidden gems of Cape North, Nova Scotia. The Lyons family who have just recently purchased it are young, vibrant, and full of life, and Peter who is managing everything is the most humble and very gracious host. The hostel itself is quite quaint being a turn of the century church that has a lot of history and character. Whether it's a dorm room or private room, both offered are wonderfully crafted for long visits, or short stays. Your time here will not be forgotten easily for years to come. Also while visiting make sure to check out the Coast Longboarding Museum located in the basement of the hostel. Full of memorabilia and the history of Longboarding. I would recommend this hostel to any vacationers up in Cape Breton.

(Peter)

Thanks Aaron , it was a pleasure having you and the crew as our guests, we look forward to your return and we will have another lobster feast, come back soon.
